The cheater recall was named by LS (LCK caster/analyst). It's the closest thing League of Legends has to a free back. You crash the third wave, the first cannon wave, into the enemy tower, recall immediately, buy, and walk back to lane before you miss meaningful CS or XP. Your opponent is stuck under their tower while you reset with an item advantage.
The "cheater" part is used in jest, as you're not literally cheating: no scripts, tricks, or exploits, and nothing bannable. It's a pure wave management play, one of the small laning intricacies that wins lane.
Why a Cheater Recall Works
You go home during dead time. That's the whole trick.
Minion waves come out every 30 seconds, and the third minion wave has the first cannon minion (the minion with the biggest health bar). Crash your full stack with it and the enemy tower stays busy while the next waves meet mid-lane with nobody there.
Recalling takes a 0.5-second cast plus an 8-second channel, then a quick trip to the shop, then the walk back into lane. Nearly all of it overlaps with time you'd spend waiting for a wave anyway. You aren't trading farm for the trip to base. You're trading boredom.
At this point, your opponent is faced with a very unpleasant decision: stay and CS under tower or recall with you.
Staying to get those last hits nets them some CS, but you come back with an item and full HP and mana, a massive stats gap at level 3. If they back too, they're off-sync, and their tower will focus down your crashed minion wave, so that gold and XP are gone. Getting back to lane in time often costs them Teleport.
How to Do a Cheater Recall

First, timing. The first wave now spawns at 0:30 rather than 1:05 starting with the 2026 season, meaning any pre-2026 timestamp will run 35 seconds late. So the roughly 3:00 crash that older guides quote is actually closer to 2:25 on paper, but make sure to double-check in Practice Tool since your clear speed affects this.
1. Slow Push the First Two Waves

On the initial wave: last-hit, match the enemy laner's autos, and make the wave sit mid-lane. Wave 2: trim their casters so that your ally wave becomes a slow push and you take lane priority. Hit level 2 first (takes the first wave + wave 2's first melee minion) and you can trade aggressively as your stack increases.
2. Hard Shove the Cannon Wave

Third wave: no more waiting. Fire off all your abilities and autos, dumping your damage right into the enemy casters first. Get your stack, with the cannon minion as well, all the way to their tower. The faster you clear, the sooner you crash and the bigger your window. Don't sweat if you miss one or two CS, because time matters more than the last-hit.
3. Recall the Moment It Crashes
Press B the moment your minions take tower damage. Do not wander first. Channel out of enemy vision (into an unwarded bush or behind your wave), where they won't be able to interrupt you or track the back. They will ideally only find out you've left once you return with an item.
4. Spend on a Planned Buy
Decide the purchase before hitting B. If you're shopping on autopilot, your free back won't stay free. Older guides put you at about 400-500 gold by the old clock, so check yours in Practice Tool.
Specific buys that start your build are a Long Sword plus Refillable Potion, Cloth Armor plus Refillable into AD bullies, Boots plus Refillable plus a Control Ward, or Dark Seal or Amplifying Tome on mages.
5. Walk Back and Freeze the Bounce
Go straight back, no jungle detours, so you return as the wave bounces towards your side of lane. Then freeze just outside your tower so the opponent needs to push far to farm, and ping your jungler. If your freezes keep getting broken, our freeze guide will help with that. The back bought you stats. The freeze lets you cash them in.
The Wave 2 and Wave 4 Cheater Recalls
The wave 2 version is the safe option. Slow push wave 1 and hard shove wave 2, then recall on around 225 gold, which is exactly enough to buy a Control Ward and Refillable Potion. Use this option if the jungler is likely to show up in your lane before wave 3 crashes (e.g., if the enemy jungler starts on your side of the map).
If you miss your opportunity with wave 3 (you couldn't get it to shove in time, or the opponent pushed it back), you can use a wave 4 cheater recall as a salvage. Hard shove wave 4 so they can't freeze it. Keep in mind there's no cannon in wave 4, so it dies a lot faster under tower, meaning a shorter recall window.
Figure out where the enemy jungler started and their likely scuttle crab path, then use whichever variant finishes before they can reach you.
Which Lanes and Champions Can Cheater Recall?

Top is the default: a long, solo lane where lane bullies with early wave clear do this naturally. Darius, Garen, Sett, and Illaoi are classic examples.
Mid is up for debate, with some guides saying that it's easier to do in mid and some saying it's harder. Both are right. You walk back faster in mid since the lane is shorter, but there's also less time before the bounce makes it to your tower. Properly dealing with this bounce takes some real AoE clear at level 2/3. That's control mage territory.
Bot lane requires a shove by both the ADC and support, so it's less common and riskier.
When Not to Cheater Recall
Skip it when:
- the enemy jungler is missing on your side of the map (if you know where they started jungling, a quick ward in river near the scuttle crab will tell you where they are)
- the matchup is so bad that you'll lose half your HP pushing. You lose the trade, then back anyway.
- your champion can't clear waves early on, so it'll take forever to shove it (meaning you'll be out of position for who knows how long)
- the opponent is trimming minions and freezing the wave really close to their tower, so it will never crash because it won't even reach tower range
- you can't fully kill the cannon wave: if the cannon lives, it'll bounce really soon and then crash at your tower when you walk back
How to Counter a Cheater Recall
If your opponent trims your casters on the 2nd wave and seems to be building the wave up, they could be looking to crash it.
Remember, if you trade with them as they're in your minion wave or bait out a single-target ability on you, minions will aggro them. You can use this to your advantage. (Aggro on minion kill was adjusted this season. Aggro still occurs if you hit the enemy champ.) Get their casters to keep it small and win the race to level 2.
If they still get the recall off, shove hard when the wave bounces back, shove it in their face/tower, don't let them freeze, then get your reset. Ping your jungler too: a laner hard-shoving wave 3 is a gank target.
Build the Cheater Recall Into Your Laning Phase

Use the Practice Tool as a playground. Crash wave 3, do your recall, and see if you can make it back in time. Next time you have a ranked replay, pause at every single one of your recalls (early game) and see:
Was the cannon dead under their tower? Where was the enemy jungler last seen on the map, and did you return before the bounce?
Ultimately, trimming wave 2 a split second too slowly can ruin your chances at getting a cheater recall. These details can be difficult to pick up on in your own games, so if you want to improve faster, get your VODs reviewed by a high-elo coach who knows where to look. It's the cheapest lead in LoL.
