How to Ward in League of Legends and Stop Dying to Ganks

You're up a kill, your wave is crashing into their tower, and the enemy jungler walks out of a river bush you were sure was empty. Gray screen. Again.

That's a vision problem, and warding in League of Legends is the cheapest skill you can fix. This warding guide covers what each ward does, how to place one, where and when to ward in your role, and how to clear enemy vision so their ganks stop landing.

Stealth Wards, Control Wards and Which Trinket to Pick

Every champion starts with the yellow Stealth Ward trinket. The League wiki's ward data has the numbers: each ward sees 900 units, lasts 90 to 120 seconds depending on average champion level, turns invisible about 2 seconds after landing and dies in 3 hits. The trinket stores two charges, and you can have three Stealth Wards out at once. Place a fourth and your oldest disappears.

The Control Ward is the one you buy, at 75 gold. It's visible, lasts until someone kills it, takes 4 hits and reveals and disables enemy stealth wards nearby. You only get one on the map, so with pink wards the placement is what counts.

Oracle Lens (red, formerly the Sweeping Lens) places no wards and only clears them. Farsight Alteration (blue) unlocks at level 9 and drops a visible 1-HP ward up to 4,000 units away. It self-destructs 3 seconds after spotting an enemy champion, so use it for a quick peek.

Everyone starts on Stealth Ward. Junglers often swap to Lens early to clear lane wards before ganks, and carries can take Farsight after 9 to check objectives without walking in blind.

How to Place a Ward in a Bush or Over a Wall

To place a ward, press your trinket key (4 by default) or your Control Ward's item key, then click. Since patch 13.4 a dynamic placement indicator shows where the ward will really land, so read it before you commit.

Bushes are where most wards go wrong. A ward that lands just outside a bush sees nothing inside it, while a ward inside sees the bush and everything around it. Patch 14.2 added a small nudge that pulls wards placed beside brush into it, but it won't save a lazy click. Put the ward in the bush's center.

Ward vision doesn't pass through terrain either. Over a short wall, the ward lands where you click. Over a thick one, it drops on whichever side your cursor is closer to, sometimes your own. To see an area behind a wall, check that the indicator shows the far side before you place the ward.

When to Place Your First Ward

Hold your first ward until the jungle camps spawn. For the 2026 season Riot moved most camps to 0:55 and Scuttle Crab to 2:55, 35 seconds earlier than before, so the old "ward at 1:25" habit is a season out of date. Until then, stand in your team's jungle-entrance bush and be the ward.

Once camps spawn, ward the river bush on the side opposite your jungler's start. That ward expires around 2:25, just before the enemy jungler's first gank window and the Scuttle fight, so drop your next one then.

Never sit on two charges. At level 1 the trinket takes 210 seconds to recharge for a 90-second ward, roughly 43% uptime, and the recharge stops while both charges are full. Every second capped is vision you never get back. Re-ward when yours looks withered on the minimap, which happens with a third of its timer left.

The Best Ward Spots in Each Lane and the Jungle

One rule sets your depth in every role. Ahead and pushing? Ward deeper, because deep vision buys more reaction time. Behind or held under your tower? Place defensive wards closer to lane. Either way, push the wave before you leave to ward so you don't bleed minions walking to a bush, and don't carry deep wards past the enemy's outer turret while it's still standing.

Top Lane

As a top laner, your default is the river bush or the river Faelight. On red side, the tri-brush becomes the enemy jungler's favorite gank route once you push up, so ward it before you shove, or go one step deeper to the enemy's top-side jungle entrance. Only spend a Control Ward on a bush you can hold. Pushed in, the enemy clears it for free. Spotting ganks early also means Teleport stays saved for plays.

Mid Lane

Ward both river side bushes when you can, starting with the side your jungler isn't on, since that's where the enemy jungler walks through unopposed. When you're ahead, push and ward the enemy's raptor-side entrance for earlier warning. A ward in the middle of the lane shows when the enemy mid laner leaves to roam or recall, which is your cue to rotate or ping your side laners.

Bot Lane

Ward the river bush or the Faelight toward Dragon. On blue side, the tri-brush is the danger when you're pushed up, so cover it before you shove. ADCs, this isn't only your support's job: ward the alcove-side lane bush so your teammate can step in and engage without face-checking. Save the river-bush Control Ward for when the lane is even or pushing. Frozen under tower, you're just gifting the enemy support a free ward kill.

Jungle

Ward your own buff and camp entrances to catch invades. To track the enemy jungler, wait until they show on the far side of the map, then drop a deep ward at their buff entrance or crossroads on the other side. One deep ward in the right spot beats three shallow ones. Ward deep against Nocturne. Against Shaco or Twitch, ward outward so you see them before they go stealthed. Our guide on how to path as a jungler turns those reads into ganks.

How to Use Faelights When You Ward

Riot added Faelights to Summoner's Rift for the 2026 season: glowing mushroom circles that turn any ward placed on them into a superward. According to the Faelight patch history, that ward gets 25% more vision radius and reveals a large bonus region, bushes included, for 45 seconds. You'll find them outside the base gates, in both rivers, in the banana brushes beside mid, and near the side lanes once the Elemental Rift transforms the map.

Each team gets one ward per Faelight, and a new one replaces yours and refreshes the 45 seconds. Control Wards get the bonus too, but Faelights are the most-swept spots on the map, so use trinket wards there unless you're constantly pushing.

Ward the river Faelight about 30 seconds before Scuttle spawns, and check your own jungle through the base-gate Faelights before walking to Drake. On the Baron side, Riot has since trimmed the river reveal so it stops short of the scuttle pad and pit entrance.

How to Ward Dragon, Baron and Other Objectives

Before the spawn timer hits zero, spread your wards along the routes the enemy team uses to get there: their side of the river and their jungle entrances. Wards in your own jungle only tell you they've already arrived.

Then take the pit. Sweep it first, because their support had the same idea, and drop a Control Ward inside to deny their vision. Add a ward past the pit so you see stealers coming from more than one entrance. If it all looks quiet, a Farsight check lets you peek from a safe distance before anyone commits.

Clear enemy wards before you start the objective, never halfway through. That's how you help your team rotate with tempo and turn a coin-flip Elemental Drake into a free one.

How to Clear Enemy Wards With a Sweeping Lens

Oracle Lens sends a drone along with you that reveals and disables enemy stealth wards in its radius and shows silhouettes of hidden enemy champions. Sweep where wards actually go: river bushes, Faelights, jungle entrances and objective pits.

Better yet, read the enemy's habits. Ward rubble stays for 5 minutes after a ward dies, so you can see where their support likes to ward. Ping or hit a ward within 10 seconds of it landing and you get its exact timer, which tells you when to sweep for the replacement.

Put your Control Wards in bushes you control, so the enemy has to walk in to kill them. When you attack theirs, finish it: a Control Ward regenerates after 6 seconds without damage, so half-hitting one does nothing. And when a stealth ward lands in front of you, kill it with autos or an auto-reset in the 1 to 2 seconds before it goes invisible.

Warding Mistakes That Leave Your Teammates Blind

When our coaches run a VOD review, the vision audit barely changes, whether someone's been playing League of Legends for one season or ten. Pause on each death and check for:

  • Two trinket charges sitting unused
  • Wards just outside a bush instead of inside it
  • Control Wards in bushes the enemy can clear for free
  • A face-check where a ward or a sweep would have done the job
  • A deep ward placed alone while the enemy jungler was missing
  • A back to buy items that skipped the Control Ward

Run that list on your last three deaths. If you'd rather have a second pair of eyes, get your VODs reviewed by a high-elo coach who'll show you exactly where your wards were when you died, and what they missed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Do You Ward as a Support?

Let your support item do the placing. Once World Atlas upgrades to Runic Compass, it holds three Stealth Ward charges, four after Bounty of Worlds, refilled whenever you visit the shop. These wards last 150 seconds and share the 3-ward cap with trinket wards, so swap your trinket to Oracle Lens after the upgrade: place with the item, clear with the Lens. Finishing the support role quest also drops Control Wards to 40 gold.

Do Control Wards Reveal Invisible Champions?

Only some. Control Wards reveal camouflaged champions such as Twitch, Evelynn and Pyke, plus stealthed traps like Teemo shrooms, Jhin traps and Shaco boxes. They don't reveal truly invisible champions such as Akali in her shroud or Shaco during Deceive. Two catches: the ward scans in pulses, so camouflaged targets can flicker out between checks, and while it's revealing something, the Control Ward itself is exposed to the enemy.

Do You Get Gold for Destroying Enemy Wards?

Yes. Bounties, per the official wiki, are 10 gold for a trinket Totem Ward, 30 for a Control Ward or support-item Stealth Ward, and 15 for a Farsight Ward. Hit or ping a visible ward within 10 seconds of placement and 5 gold of its bounty pays out straight away. Killing wards stopped granting XP in patch 14.19, so clear them for gold and information.
