A player on r/summonerschool admitted after seven years of League of Legends, they still can't keep lane cooldowns in their head. Everyone knows ability cooldowns exist. Almost nobody plays around them.
To fix that, learn the one enemy cooldown each matchup turns on, track it, punish or bait the window, protect your own, then carry it into team fights.
How Ability Cooldowns Work in League of Legends
A cooldown (abbreviated as CD) is how long a champion ability, item, summoner spell or rune stays unusable after activation, until the recharge is complete.
Most cooldowns shrink with ability haste: cooldown × 100 ÷ (100 + haste), so 25 haste turns a 10-second spell into 8. Haste replaced the old CDR percentage, so ignore any page still quoting a 40% cap.
The Types of Cooldown That Change Your Read

Static cooldowns ignore haste: Anivia's Rebirth stays at 240 seconds, Malphite's passive shield at 8/7/6 seconds. Amumu's Bandage Toss stores two charges, so one cast doesn't mean it's down. No haste source affects runes.
Summoner spells are the longest cooldowns you'll track, with Flash at 300 seconds. Summoner spell haste reduces them: Cosmic Insight's 18 plus Ionian Boots of Lucidity's 10 cut Flash to about 234 seconds.
Learn the Champion Cooldowns That Decide Your Lane

You only need the one or two abilities each matchup hinges on: the escape, the engage CC or the sustain.
- Top: Riven's Valor (dash and shield) is 10 seconds at rank 1, 6 at rank 5.
- Mid: Ahri's Charm is a flat 12 seconds at every rank.
- Bot: as the ADC, watch the support. Blitzcrank's Rocket Grab is 20 seconds at rank 1.
Cooldown champions such as Riven, Renekton, Sett, Garen, Yasuo and Yone use no mana, so cooldowns are their only limit.
Most basic abilities are slowest at rank 1, so levels 1 to 5 hold the biggest windows. Buffs and nerfs move these numbers, so check tooltips on the loading screen.
Track and Ping Cooldowns During the Game

- See the cast, check the game timer, add the cooldown.
- For summoner spells, type the return time in chat: a Flash at 8:40 becomes "ezreal flash 13:40" (cast time + 5:00).
- Open the Tab scoreboard and click the enemy's summoner or ultimate icon within 15 seconds of seeing the cast to tell your team it's down.
- Ctrl or Alt + left-click your own ultimate or Flash on the HUD to share its status.
Ally scoreboard pings show only to your party until that cooldown hits its last 50%, so solo players should ping from the HUD.
Punish the Window After a Key Ability Is Used

Your usable window is the remaining cooldown minus the time to walk in and back out.
Say that's two seconds each way. Riven burns a rank-1 Valor: that's 10 seconds, six of them free. At rank 5 it's 6 seconds and two free. Same mistake, a third of the punishment.
A short trade is an auto plus your spell, then out before their ability returns (learn to CS while trading so it costs no gold). An all-in needs their main defensive ability down and no Flash.
If they play safe, take free last hits, a plate, or crash the wave and recall (our wave management guide covers the timing). In a losing matchup, the window is your only safe time to trade or farm forward, so give up the rest.
Bait Cooldowns Out and Respect Your Own
Don't wait for a mistake. Step into range and back out, or threaten a last hit, and many players throw the skillshot. Push the wave so the enemy spends wave-clear abilities on minions, then trade.
Your opponent tracks your cooldowns too, so after you miss your key spell, walk off the wave to max range until it's back.
A held ability is more of a threat than a used one. Low elo is full of free windows because most players cast on cooldown.
Play Around Team Cooldowns in Macro
Start fights and objectives when your ultimates are up and theirs were just used. Two burned bot-lane Flashes give your team a 300-second window for a turret attack or dragon. Ping your ultimate before every objective.
The ADC tracks the enemy support's engage and any flank threat, like a Twitch who just went invisible, before stepping up. The support tells the ADC when engage is ready.
For a drill, open a replay, pause at every enemy key cast, note when it returns, and check what you did in that window. A LoL Coaching coach marks exactly those missed windows in a VOD review, so to improve faster, get your VODs reviewed by a high-elo coach. Count the windows you walked past.
