Why Wave Management Matters
Wave management is one of the most impactful, and most overlooked, skills in League of Legends. It determines when you can trade, roam, recall, and set up ganks. A player who understands waves will consistently create advantages that compound over the course of a game.
"If CS is king, wave management is the kingmaker. You can't farm well without understanding where the wave will be in 30 seconds," says Coach Luminara, Challenger.
The Three Core Techniques
Freezing
A freeze holds the wave just outside your tower range. To set one up:
- Let the enemy push by only last-hitting (no abilities on the wave).
- Once 3–4 extra enemy caster minions are alive, tank them briefly, then let your minions equalise.
- Maintain the freeze by matching the enemy's damage to the wave: kill minions only at the last possible moment.
When to freeze:
- You're ahead and want to deny CS and XP
- The enemy jungler is on your side of the map
- You're playing a scaling champion that wants to farm safely
Slow-Pushing
A slow push builds a large wave over 2–3 waves by killing only the caster minions in each wave. Your minions gradually outnumber the enemy's, creating a "snowball" wave.
When to slow push:
- Before a recall: the big wave crashes into the enemy tower and you lose minimal CS
- Before an objective: the wave demands attention, forcing the enemy to choose between CS and the fight
- To set up a dive: a large wave under the enemy tower tanks shots for you
Fast-Pushing
Use all your abilities and autos to clear the wave as quickly as possible. This shoves the wave into the enemy tower immediately.
When to fast push:
- You've just killed your lane opponent and want to deny CS to tower
- You need to roam and want the wave to reset
- You're rotating for a team fight and need the wave cleared
Wave States Cheat Sheet
| Technique | Setup | Best Used When | Risk Level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freeze | Last-hit only, tank extra minions | Ahead in lane, denying opponent | Low |
| Slow Push | Kill casters, leave melees | Pre-recall, pre-objective | Medium |
| Fast Push | Full clear with abilities | Post-kill, roaming | High (you're pushed up) |
Common Mistakes
Even players who understand the concepts make these errors:
- Breaking your own freeze: accidentally using an AoE ability and pushing the wave
- Slow-pushing at the wrong time: building a big wave when the enemy jungler is nearby, giving them a double kill and a huge wave
- Not crashing before recall: leaving a wave in the middle of the lane and recalling, causing a freeze against you
"The number one wave mistake I see in coaching sessions is players recalling with the wave in the middle of the lane. It feels fine in the moment, but you come back to 2 waves under your tower and lose 300+ gold," says Coach Tidewalker, Master.
Practice Plan
Here's a simple weekly plan to improve your wave management:
- Day 1–2: Play 3 games focusing only on freezing when ahead. Note how the enemy reacts.
- Day 3–4: Play 3 games practising slow-push → recall timing. Did you lose CS while away?
- Day 5: Play 2 games where you fast-push after every kill and immediately look for a roam.
- Day 6–7: Combine all three techniques. Before each wave arrives, consciously choose: freeze, slow push, or fast push.
Taking It Further
Wave management interacts with vision, jungle tracking, and team macro. Once you're comfortable with the three techniques, start thinking about how wave states affect objective control. For example, a slow push in a side lane before Dragon spawns forces the enemy team into an impossible choice.
