5 Tips to Climb Out of Silver

LoL Coaching Editorial··6 min read

Introduction

Silver is one of the most common ranks in League of Legends, and for good reason: it's where the transition from casual play to competitive understanding begins. Many players hover in Silver for entire seasons, frustrated by what feels like an invisible wall. The good news? That wall is made of a handful of correctable habits.

We asked our highest-rated coaches what advice they'd give a Silver player with one week to climb. Here are the five tips that came up again and again.

1. Shrink Your Champion Pool

The single biggest lever you can pull is playing fewer champions. Silver players often rotate through 15+ champions per month, which makes it nearly impossible to build the muscle memory needed for consistent play.

"Pick two champions for your main role and one for your off-role. That's it. You'll see results within 20 games," says Coach Axiom, Grandmaster.

A focused pool lets you stop thinking about what your champion does and start thinking about what the game demands.

2. CS Over Kills

In Silver, the average CS per minute hovers around 5.5. Bumping that to 7 CS/min gives you a roughly 1,400 gold lead at 20 minutes, the equivalent of two kills.

Try this drill in your next five games:

  1. Set a timer for 10 minutes.
  2. Focus exclusively on last-hitting; ignore trading unless the enemy oversteps.
  3. Write down your 10-minute CS count after each game.

Track your progress. You'll be surprised how fast you improve once you pay attention.

3. Map Awareness: the F-Key Trick

Bind your camera to F2–F5 for your teammates. Every time you push a wave to the enemy tower, quickly tap through each key. This takes one second and gives you a snapshot of the entire map.

Benefits of this habit:

  • You'll spot jungle ganks before they happen
  • You'll identify roam timings for free kills
  • You'll know which lanes to rotate toward after objectives

4. Die Less

This sounds obvious, but Silver players average 6–8 deaths per game. Cutting that to 4 or fewer has a dramatic effect on your win rate. Before every aggressive play, ask yourself:

  • Where is the enemy jungler?
  • Do I have vision of the river?
  • Can I survive if this goes wrong?

If you can't answer all three, don't take the fight.

5. Play With Purpose

Stop auto-piloting. Before each game, set one micro-goal: "I will track the enemy jungler's first three camps" or "I will ward the pixel brush at 3:00 every game." Focused practice compounds faster than grinding 10 games on autopilot.

Wrap-Up

Climbing out of Silver isn't about mechanical outplays or finding an OP champion. It's about consistency, awareness, and deliberate practice. Apply these five tips over your next 30 games and track the results.
