How to Carry as Support in League of Legends (and Actually Carry Games)

In League of Legends, the support who carries is rarely the one doing the most damage. It's the one deciding where fights happen, when they happen, and who's still standing afterwards.

That's how you carry as support: by controlling the conditions everyone else fights in, whether or not you out-kill your ADC.

Every support main knows the feeling: you ward, you peel, you lose anyway. When you play support, your levers are lane, roams, vision, picks, peel, and choosing who your carry is. Pull them in the right order and you'll carry games from the support role far more often than your match history suggests.

Can You Carry as a Support? What Carrying Really Means

Yes, it's possible to carry from support. It just doesn't look like a Katarina pentakill.

A solo carry wins because their damage outscales everyone else's. A support carries by making the team's win condition happen. If your jungler wins through early dragons, you make dragons free. If your mid laner is a late-game hypercarry, you get them there alive.

So stop grading yourself on KDA. A 2/1/18 support who watched every dragon go to the enemy did less than a 1/5/12 support whose engages set up three drakes and a Baron. Objectives and won fights are how you carry the game for the whole team.

Win the 2v2 With Your ADC in the Laning Phase

The early game starts with the level-2 race. Bot lane hits level 2 after the full first wave plus the melee minions of the second. Help your ADC shove, tag that last melee, and walk forward with two abilities while the enemy bot has one.

After that, the 2v2 runs on cooldowns, and enemy supports hold the important ones. When Nautilus misses Dredge Line or Thresh burns Death Sentence, their lane loses its main threat for several seconds. Trade then. When their key CC is up, respect it.

Use the lane brush. The enemy ADC can't see what you're doing, so poke from it forces them to pick between CS and HP every wave.

Track the enemy jungler too. If they started top side, they're clearing toward you, so ward river early and either back off or set up a counter-gank.

Finally, back with your ADC so you return with items together. That's how bot lane snowballs, and a winning lane is what frees you to roam. Our guide to the best ADC and support duos shows which pairings win the 2v2.

Roam at the Right Time: When to Leave Bot

Roams are how you play the rest of the map. A gank mid with your jungler becomes a 3v1 the enemy midlaner can't trade out of. A river walk before scuttle or drake clears their wards and sets up the objective without anyone dying. Then get back before the next wave lands.

Riot has noticed: Patch 26.19 shifted some World Atlas and Runic Compass health into regen, with the devs saying melee supports had "too much of their power in roaming and all-ins." Treat roams as calculated risks, not a cure for boredom.

The Three Checks Before You Leave Bot

  1. The wave is crashed. Ideally a cannon wave. That pins the enemy duo under their tower, so your ADC loses little while you're gone.
  2. Your ADC is safe. They're backing, or they can hold under tower without getting dove. Keeping your carry alive beats any kill in mid lane.
  3. The target is real. The enemy mid laner is shoved up, has no Flash, or has no vision on your path. Ganks without one of those are just a walk.

Then price it: every roam costs your ADC XP, plates and time alone against two. If the best outcome is worth less, stay.

Control Vision to Carry When Nothing Else Is Working

Vision is the one lever that still works from behind. You can be 0/4 next to a 0/5 ADC and still decide where the enemy is allowed to walk.

Warding tells your team where the enemy is. Denial stops them knowing where you are. Sweep enemy wards, hold key spots with control wards, and the enemy starts making calls blind.

So buy control wards every back. Since patch 26.1, completing the support role quest gives you a dedicated control ward slot and cheaper control wards.

Against a fed enemy carry, aim that denial at them. Clear the enemy vision around their farm and roam paths, and they start hesitating instead of snowballing.

The Pre-Objective Vision Routine

First dragon spawns at 5:00, and Baron now spawns at 20:00 instead of 25:00. Set up vision around the pit 60 to 90 seconds before either, so your team can take objectives on its own terms:

  1. Group with your jungler. Warding river alone is how supports die.
  2. Sweep the approaches. Run Oracle Lens through the river entrances and nearby brush.
  3. Control ward the pit-side brush. That's the ward you need alive when the fight starts.
  4. Forward ward the enemy jungle entrances. Now you see them coming, and they're blind.

Play-Making: Start Fights Your Team Has Already Won

This is the highest-ceiling way to carry. One Nautilus hook on the enemy carry turns a 5v5 into a 5v4 before anyone presses R.

A pick is only right when three things are true. Follow-up is in range, because a Thresh hook with nobody nearby is a solo all-in. The target matters, so hook the carry, not the tank. And you know where the other four are. If you don't, assume they're behind your target.

Throw skill shots from fog or a flank. A hook from the front gets sidestepped. One from side brush lands before anyone reacts. Rell's Crash Down and Rakan's Grand Entrance hit hardest from angles nobody is watching.

Then get picks before objectives, not after. A pick 45 seconds before drake means a 5v4 dragon fight. Win a fight before it starts and team fights stop being coin flips.

Peel: Keeping Your Carry Alive in Teamfights

Late game, carrying usually turns defensive. The enemy plan is to kill your carry. Your job is to make that impossible.

Stand between your carry and the divers, not beside or ahead of them. Save your CC for the assassin or bruiser coming through, not the frontline tank that happened to be in range first. We see that mistake constantly in VOD reviews: stun spent on the Ornn, Kha'Zix jumps in, nothing left.

Time heals and shields to burst windows. A shield popped early eats one poke. The same shield timed to the assassin's commit keeps your team alive.

And peel the strongest teammate, not automatically the ADC. If your top laner is 8/1 and your ADC is 0/5, protect the top laner. The core call: peel when they go for your carry, engage when they don't.

How to Carry When Your ADC Is Losing

Sometimes bot lane is gone, and trying to carry a lost lane just feeds more.

Around 10 to 14 minutes, make the call: who is my carry now? Check three things:

  • Gold leads. Tab and compare items, not kills.
  • Item spikes. Who's about to finish something that changes fights?
  • Conversion. Which laner can turn your peel and vision into objectives? A fed mid laner next to dragon beats a fed top laner split-pushing alone.

Usually it's your mid laner or jungler, and your win condition moved with them. Shift roams, wards and peel to their side, and let your ADC farm safely under tower.

Then play for one fight around dragon or Baron where your real carry is ahead.

Best Supports to Carry Games in Solo Queue

There's no single best champion for carrying from support. The best supports to climb with are the ones that fit your playstyle.

Engage: Nautilus, Rell, Thresh, Rakan, Leona. They carry by starting fights. Nautilus is the most forgiving thanks to Depth Charge, a point-and-click ult. Thresh has the highest ceiling, since his lantern turns engage into peel.

Enchanters: Soraka, Taric, Yuumi, Lulu, Milio, Janna. They carry through a fed teammate. Soraka's Wish heals your whole team across the map, Taric's Cosmic Radiance makes his team briefly invulnerable, and Yuumi turns a fed bruiser into a raid boss.

Damage: Brand, Zyra. Real dmg and poke for lanes that can't reach you, but weak peel, so they need a real frontline.

Off-meta picks work if you've mastered them, because mastery beats tier placement in most solo queue games.

Support changes land almost every patch. Patch 26.17 alone trimmed Thresh's Flay damage. So skip static tier lists, check current notes, and build a pool of two or three champions across two styles. If you want a second opinion on yours, book a session with a Challenger support coach.

What to Fix First at Your Rank

  • Iron to Silver: stay alive and ward consistently. A dead support before dragon loses more games here than bad macro.
  • Gold to Plat: turn picks into objectives and time roams with the three checks.
  • Emerald and up: vision denial and choosing the right carry. Everyone wards here. Climbers decide what the enemy can't see.

Then build one habit. After ranked games, open the replay and count three things: deaths in the minute before an objective, control wards bought per back, and what each roam actually produced.

Those three numbers show the ways to carry a game you're currently throwing away, more honestly than your KDA ever will. A coach spots the pattern faster, which is why a support VOD review is worth booking: roams and vision habits can't hide on replay.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you get an S grade on support in League of Legends?

Your grade is a percentile against everyone in your region playing the same champion in the same position, per Riot's Champion Mastery guide. So an S on Nautilus support means beating other Nautilus supports, not your ADC. Riot keeps the exact metrics private, but in practice ward placement and ward clearing weigh heavily for supports.

Why is support a good role for climbing solo queue?

Support is usually short on players, so Riot lists it as a priority role alongside jungle. As a support main you rarely get autofilled off it, and priority roles occasionally earn Aegis of Valor, which doubles the LP from a win (or, per Riot's /dev post, prevents LP loss on a defeat if you earn a C grade or better). You'll also often face autofilled opponents who barely know the role.

What vision score per minute should a support aim for?

Riot publishes no official target, but tracker data gives a fair guide: 1.5 to 2 vision score per minute covers the basics, 2 to 3 is an active support, and 3+ is well above average. Compare per minute, not totals, since long games inflate the raw number.

Does carrying as support get you more LP?

No. LP is rewarded for victory and deducted on defeat, and the size of each change depends on your MMR relative to your rank, not your KDA or grade. Carrying matters because it wins more ranked games, and wins are what move your MMR.
