How to Freeze a Lane in League of Legends: A Step-by-Step Guide

Freezing a lane is the quietest way to beat someone in League of Legends. You pin the minion wave near your own tower, and your opponent picks between walking into danger and missing gold. (This is League, not Mobile Legends.) Here's the three-step method, when a freeze is worth it, and how to respond to one. Consider it chapter one of any macro guide.

What Freezing a Lane Means (and Where to Hold the Wave)

A freeze parks the minion wave in one spot. The enemy wave slightly outnumbers yours, so it keeps pushing towards you, and your fresh minions keep meeting it in the same place.

Hold the creep wave close to your turret but just outside tower range. If your tower shoots an enemy minion, the wave is too close. Tower shots kill enemy minions, so your wave wins and pushes back.

The sweet spot is near the tree line on your side: jungle cover for you, the river at your opponent's back.

Why Freeze Your Lane

Money first. Per the League wiki's minion page, a wave is 3 melee minions at 20 gold and 3 casters at 14, so every non-cannon wave you deny costs your lane opponent about 102 gold.

To win it back, they have to walk past the middle of the lane, right where your jungler wants them for a gank. Meanwhile you're csing safely by your tower, and if you're stronger you can zone them off the wave entirely.

A freeze can deny XP too, but only sometimes (more in the FAQ).

How to Freeze Your Lane, Step by Step

Keeping the lane frozen takes three moves, in this order.

Step 1: Get the Wave onto Your Side

A freeze only works if the wave is already pushing toward you. Let the enemy shove it to you, or pull it: walk in front of the enemy minions and tank their aggro so they follow.

Use the trick from Dignitas' freezing guide: drag the first enemy wave to one side so it 2v1s your first melee minion. Don't hit minions while it's still coming.

Step 2: Keep 3-4 Extra Enemy Casters Alive

Keep roughly 3-4 extra enemy casters alive so their wave always slightly outnumbers yours.

Why casters? Melee minions that win their fight walk forward and shred your backline, so kill surplus enemy melees early.

Cannon waves shift the balance. One arrives every 3rd wave until 14:00, every 2nd until 25:00, then every wave. Your cannon soaks damage and hits hard, so go into your cannon waves with an extra caster or so.

Step 3: Last Hit Only and Tank to Hold Position

Auto attack for last hits only. No abilities on the wave. Watch for splash that pushes without asking:

  • Tiamat-line items cleave everything around your target, so last hit minions on the pack's edge.
  • Jinx's rockets splash the wave. Swap to minigun.
  • Kayle's stacked attacks fire waves through the whole line from level 11. Freeze before then.

Signs the freeze is slipping, and the fix:

  • Your casters enter the turret ring: tank the enemy minions to hold them outside tower range, HP permitting.
  • Enemy surplus drops below about 3 casters: crash the wave into their tower and let it bounce back to reset.
  • Enemy melee minions reach your casters: kill them now.

When to Freeze and When to Push Instead

Freeze the lane when:

  • You're winning lane and can punish them for walking up.
  • They just recalled or died and must walk back into your freeze.
  • Your jungler is close, or theirs just showed on the other side.
  • You're behind and need a safe spot to farm.

Stop when an objective is about to spawn, when you need to roam or recall, or past roughly 15 minutes, when map pressure beats lane denial. That's slow push or fast push territory.

How to Freeze Top, Mid, and Bot Lane

Top lane is where a freeze hurts most. It's long and isolated, so a frozen-out opponent walks nearly the whole lane, from their tower to yours. Each walk up risks a gank, and each walk skipped loses a wave. If top is your role, a top lane coach can drill this until it's automatic.

Mid lane is short, so a freeze denies less, and most mids fast push to roam anyway.

Bot lane needs both laners to commit: the support stops hitting minions while the ADC last hits. Engage supports gain the most, since the freeze pulls the enemy into hook range.

How to Respond When the Enemy Freezes on You

Don't walk up into it alone. A kill hands the enemy at least 300 gold early on (more after level 6), about three denied waves, plus the XP and time you lose while dead. Staying alive beats a few CS.

Instead:

  • Ping your jungler for a 2v1 shove.
  • Break it with AoE wave clear once the enemy jungler shows elsewhere.
  • Ward before walking up.
  • Roam, grab a jungle camp, or help another lane.

If the enemy laner harasses you every step, the freeze is working. Beat it with numbers.

Review Your Freezes in Your Own Game Video

A YouTube video shows a clean freeze. Your own replay shows where yours broke. Scrub to each wave arrival (every 30 seconds early on) and check:

  1. Enemy versus friendly minion count.
  2. Where the wave sits against your tower ring.
  3. The moment the freeze broke, and why.

For most players, that's where the missing LP was hiding. Want a second pair of eyes? Our coaches run this exact check when they review your VODs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you slow push a wave instead of freezing it?

Flip the freeze rule: kill the enemy casters first and leave their melee minions alive, so your wave holds a small edge. It grows as each next wave joins, building a big stack over 2-3 waves. Crash it into their tower on your cannon wave, and they lose minions to the turret while you roam or recall.

Can you keep a lane frozen permanently?

Not forever. A freeze breaks the moment you recall or die, because nobody is left to manage it. The enemy's surplus casters walk into your turret, get killed, and the wave bounces back toward the enemy. Enemy jungler help breaks it too, since two champions shove through any surplus. Hold it for a few waves, then reset.

Does freezing deny experience or only gold?

Gold, easily. Experience, only sometimes. Minion XP is split among champions within 1,500 units of the dying minion, so an opponent hanging back from your freeze still levels up with no gold to show for it. To deny XP too, you have to zone them beyond that range, which usually means you're already well ahead in lane.
