How to Carry as a Top Laner in League of Legends: A Solo Carry Guide to Climb

Top lane is an island. Your jungler lives bot side, and the only player who cares about your lane is the one trying to kill you.

That's why so many top laners go 5/0 and still lose.

This League of Legends guide is for ranked players stuck there. To solo carry as a top laner, you turn 1v1 wins into map pressure, and even a beginner can learn that. The LoL path never changes: win the lane, cash the lead, then choose the side lane or grouping, and climb.

What Carrying From Top Lane Actually Means

A top laner carries in three ways, and "most kills" isn't one of them.

  1. Side-lane pressure. You shove so hard that two enemies have to answer you, leaving your team 4v3 elsewhere.
  2. Trading pressure for objectives. Every lane win moves something on the map: plates, Voidgrubs, a tower.
  3. Winning the team fight. As frontline you soak their cooldowns. As a diver you delete their carry.

A 5/0 top laner who never leaves lane hasn't carried anything. They've conquered an island nobody else lives on.

Build a Top Lane Champion Pool That Can Solo Carry

Keep two or three champions. In solo queue, mastery beats counter-picking: knowing your exact damage and cooldowns wins more games than a matchup edge you can't execute.

Then match each pick to its carry path:

  • Duelists and split pushers (Fiora, Jax, Camille) carry through the side lane. They win the 1v1 against whoever shows up, so the enemy has to send two. Fiora also picked up a health growth buff in patch 26.19.
  • Juggernauts (Darius, Garen) carry by snowballing lane kills. A fed Darius with five Hemorrhage stacks doesn't need a plan, just a target.
  • Skirmishers (Riven, Irelia) reward mechanics. Riven's animation cancels have a brutal skill ceiling, and the payoff is winning fights you had no business taking.
  • Tanks (Ornn, Malphite) carry through engage. One clean Malphite ult wins a team fight, but tanks have a lower solo-queue carry ceiling since they need teammates to follow up.

Finally, learn your matchups: against every common melee opponent, know who wins level 1, level 3 and level 6. Or find a Master or Challenger top lane coach who has already played them to death.

Win the Lane With Wave Control, Trades and Wards

Every carry starts with a lane lead, and lane leads come from the wave more than your combo. Play the wave right and you win trades before they start.

Freeze Near Your Turret to Deny CS

"Freeze and deny CS" is the top answer on every top lane thread. Correct, but vague.

Freezing works when the enemy wave is slightly bigger than yours (about 3-4 more minions) and sits just outside your turret range. You last-hit only.

Now your opponent picks between two bad options: walk up to farm deep in your half, where your jungler can gank, or hang back and lose gold every wave.

To recall, break it. Slow push by killing their casters first, let your wave stack, then crash it into their turret and back. The wave bounces to you and you lose nothing.

One rule before you push past the river: ward river or tri-brush first.

Trade Around Cooldowns, Minion Waves and Level Spikes

Trade when their key ability is down. Darius just wasted Apprehend? Walk in. Jax burned Counter Strike? That's a free window.

Never trade inside their bigger minion wave. Hit an enemy champion near their minions and every one of them switches to you. Early on, minion aggro decides more trades than mechanics do.

Know the level 2, 3 and 6 spikes, and all-in when the wave, their cooldowns and your Ignite line up.

Take Ignite for kill pressure in snowball lanes, Teleport for map presence and safer scaling. Ignite costs less than it used to, since finishing the top lane role quest hands you Unleashed Teleport as a bonus summoner spell.

Turn Your Lane Lead Into Map Pressure

This is where most top laners throw, and we see it in VODs constantly: kill, shove, back, buy, walk into lane like nothing happened.

A solo kill or a wave crash gives you 30-60 seconds when nobody can contest top side. Spend them in this order:

  1. Take plates. Since patch 26.1, plates no longer fall off at 14 minutes, but their gold starts shrinking at minute 11, so early plates are still the best money in your lane.
  2. Contest Voidgrubs or Herald with your jungler. Grubs spawn at 8:00 and Herald at 15:00. Lane priority lets you secure what would otherwise be a coin-flip objective.
  3. Invade the enemy's top-side jungle. Nothing spawning? Take their camps and wreck their jungler's next clear.
  4. Teleport bot or to dragon. If a fight is brewing bot side and your wave is crashed, a Teleport flank decides it.

Pick your step with two checks. Where is the enemy jungler? If they last showed bot side, run the whole list. If you don't know, take plates and back. And what is the wave doing? Never leave while it pushes toward you, or it crashes into your tower and burns the gold you just earned.

Split Push or Grouping: Picking the Right Late-Game Play

Every guide says top laners either split push or group. Almost none says how to choose.

Split push when all four are true:

  • You win the 1v1 against whoever is likely to answer.
  • The side lane is warded, so you see the collapse coming.
  • Your Teleport is up, or theirs is down.
  • Your team can hold without a fight, through waveclear or disengage.

Riot trimmed the role quest Teleport cooldowns in patch 26.19 specifically to encourage split pushing.

Group with your team when:

  • An objective is about to spawn and your champion's value is frontline or engage. Baron now spawns at 20:00, so grouping around objectives starts earlier than it used to.
  • The enemy side-laner out-duels you. Splitting into a losing 1v1 just hands them a second tower.

One rule sits above both: never die in a side lane just before an objective spawns. That hands the enemy team a 5v4, and no tower is worth it. If an objective is a minute out, crash the wave and walk to your teammates.

How to Carry When Your Teammates Are Losing

Some games your bot lane is 0/6 before first dragon. You can still win those, just not by joining every fight.

Play for your own win condition. If your team keeps losing fights, don't add yourself to the next coin flip. One more body in a lost fight usually means one more death.

Draw two enemies to your side lane instead. Every second two enemy champions spend on you is a second your team farms in peace. Then watch for shutdown gold: the enemy team's fed carry has a bounty on their head, and one catch can swing the game back.

Mute and focus. One game is only LP. The climb is the sum of hundreds of games, and you're the only player in all of them.

Climb Faster With a High-Elo Top Lane Coach

Carrying mistakes are hard to spot in your own gameplay, because you remember the fights, not the wave. In a VOD review on LoL Coaching, Master and Challenger top laners check where the wave was when you recalled, where the enemy jungler was when you traded, and what you did in the 60 seconds after a kill. Book a session with a Challenger top lane coach for live coaching or a VOD review, and you leave with a personalized improvement plan. Pro tip: run those three checks on your own replays tonight.

Top Lane Carry FAQ

How do I deal with ranged champions in top lane?

Start Doran's Shield and take Second Wind, then stop walking into poke. Let the wave push to you so the ranged top has to stand in your range just to farm. Save your gap-closer until they burn their escape or key spell, then all-in. Chasing before that just donates HP.

Should I follow the enemy top laner when they roam?

Usually not. Ping, shove and take plates or the tower. A full set of outer plates is worth 600 gold until the minute-11 decay starts eating into it, far more than arriving late to someone else's fight. Follow only when the roam targets an objective your team will contest and you'll get there in time.

When does the enemy jungler usually first gank top lane?

Patch 26.1 moved the first jungle camps to 0:55, so a three-camp level 3 gank tends to land around 2:30 to 3:00, while a full-clear jungler usually shows up around 3:30 to 4:00. Have river or tri-brush warded before that first window, and hug your turret until you know where they started.
